October 7 HealthLINE Meeting

The agenda, directions and minutes from the July meeting have been sent out, so let me know if you didn't receive the e-mail. The meeting will be held in the South Hall of the South Campus of John Peter Smith Hospital. E-mail me for more detailed directions.

We will be voting for a new Chair Elect and Treasurer, so don't forget to bring your ballot if you haven't already sent it back to Mary Peters.

Sept. 22 Teleconference Update

Please note that the parking instructions have changed slightly as follows:

Parking Services has requested that teleconference attendees park on the other side of Record Crossing at St. Paul University Hospital’s visitor parking garage. The visitor parking garage is the gray rectangle across from the Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School Building (V) on the campus map. Parking will cost $3.00.

MLA Teleconference

The UT Southwestern Library will host the following MLA teleconference. Registration for this event is funded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Attendance is free.

The Art and Practice of Electronic Journal, Book, and Database Licenses: Practical Tips for Health Care Organizations. The goals for this teleconference are to:

*Provide practical tips to those who deal with licensing agreements for electronic books, journals, and databases

*Enhance the knowledge of information professionals about the pros and cons of electronic licensing agreements

*Provide useful negotiation tips for health information professionals, legal counsel, purchasing departments, and those dealing with consortium licensing agreements

DIRECTIONS:
Room V7.114 is located in the V Building, which can be found on the north campus map by looking just below “6000 Harry Hines Blvd.”
Closest intersection: Harry Hines and Record Crossing Mapsco 34S (Campus parking is $2.00).
Directions:
From the west:Take the I-35 Record Crossing exit and head east. Just prior to Harry Hines, turn left into the school’s parking lot. (There are 2 separate driveways going into the lot.) From the east:Take Inwood to Harry Hines. Turn right (going north) until Record Crossing, which is the 1st light immediately after the turn. Turn left, then turn right into the school’s parking lot.
1. Once parked, look for the metal book return by the building.
2. Use the adjacent entrance and then follow the sign to the elevators
3. Take the elevator up to the 7th floor.
4. Go through the wooden door and turn left. V7.114 is the 2nd door on the right side of the corridor.

July 15 Meeting Information

For those of you not on the HealthLINE listserv, the agenda for the upcoming meeting has been sent out. Let me know if you would like a copy.

Greg Bodin will be teaching the class, “Managing Electronic Resources in Health Science Libraries” from 8:30-11:30. If you would like to attend, please register. For more information see the class description.

The HealthLINE business meeting will be held from 11:45-12:45.

The class and business meeting will be held in Pike Hall, which is in the center of the building near the main entrance. The Library is the first floor of the A wing.

HealthLINE bylaws under revision

I am charged with updating the bylaws and we recently agreed that #1 below needed to be done. Number 3 is just something I've been thinking about. So here are the changes I'm proposing. You should have received the actual document on the listserv.

1. Revise the word "consortium" to "organization" or "association" since we agreed the definition has changed since the 1970's when the "Metroplex Consortium" first started.

2. Take care of some standardization on the capitalization.

3. Add geographic wording to the category "Associate Individual Membership." I added the statement “or do not live in the north central Texas area” so that it would cover our various friends and ex-members who want to continue to receive information or be on the mailing list. We already include that term in the description of our Institutional Members.
The idea is that if someone wants to make the effort to participate we should encourage them, but at the same time this is a group aimed at the “north central Texas area.” We try to hold our programs in areas most of our members can reach.

Course Announcement

Helena Vonville’s ‘Charting Health Information for Texas’ course will be offered at the University of North Texas Health Science Center on June 17, 2004.
The Texas Public Health Training Center has agreed to host the course and the session will be held in our UNTHSC Public Health Department computer lab. The course will offered twice on June 17, so participants should register for only one session. Please note that registration is required.

HealthLINE Blog- New & Improved!

Blogger released a lot of cool new templates and options for blogs this weekend, so I've made some changes to the HealthLINE blog. The format and color are hopefully a little more pleasing. I've also added a list of all the institutions affiliated with HealthLINE. For most, I've linked to the library's page. When I couldn't find the library's page, I linked to the homepage of the institution . If you find that I've missed your library, let me know.

Travel Awards

At the most recent meeting, HealthLINE members voted to create two Travel Awards at $250.00 each to be used to attend the South Central Chapter of MLA in Houston, TX, October 22-27, 2004. One will be awarded to a HealthLINE member and one will go to a library student (TWU or UNT). Click here to apply. Applications must be submitted by August 16, 2004. Nursing on the Net: Healthcare Resources You Can Use. 8am-12pm
From the NNLM SCC site: This hands-on workshop is designed for librarians responsible for information services to the Nursing and Allied Health professions. Participants will learn to use and evaluate web-based health information resources, find online news services, continuing online education courses, and consumer health websites.

The next meeting will be held on April 15 at the UNT Dallas Campus. Park on the north side of the building and enter at the main entrance which is located at the center of the building. Once you enter the building, turn left at the first hallway and room 212 will be on your right.

The program includes a discussion about clincial decision support tools by Mori Lou and a demonstration of FIRSTConsult and MDConsult by the local MDConsult rep, Clay Norris.
