HealthLINE Travel Award

Thinking about SCC/MLA? This might interest you!

The HealthLINE Travel Award was established to defray the expenses an attendee would incur while attending the annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association. Two awards will be given: one (1) to a HealthLINE member whose membership dues have been paid in full by the application deadline, and one (1) to a UNT or TWU library science graduate student will be eligible to receive the award of $300 to defray meeting costs. Attendance at this meeting allows the recipient to network with colleagues, register for continuing education courses, hear guest speakers, attend the contributed paper sessions, and participate in the various social events that occur at each year's conference.


Use the appropriate form to apply for one of two travel awards of $300 to attend the annual meeting of the 2007 SCC/MLA Annual Meeting to be held in Albuquerque, NM on October 20-24, 2007.

**NOTE: the student application requires a library science instructor nomination form. Please ensure that an instructor fills out the Faculty Recommendation Form. The applications can be found on the HealthLINE Downloads Page.


All completed applications are due by August 31, 2007. The recipient selected for each award will be notified by September 7, 2007. Recipients will be asked to report on their SCC experience at the January 2008 meeting of HealthLINE.

HealthLINE meets at UNT Dallas 7-19-07

We enjoyed seeing our colleagues and the new UNT Dallas facility. The program featured wonderful biodiversity photos by Dr. and Mrs. Dimijian. The afternoon session on grant writing by Michelle Malizia from the NN/LM SCR gave us great instructions and tips.

Geeks Bearing Gifts CE Class in McKinney

The Consumer Health Information Center at Central Park Campus (Collin County Community College District) is sponsoring the "Geeks Bearing Gifts: Unwrapping New Technology Trends" continuing education class on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Class Description:
This class is intended to provide a fun, fast-paced, and informative introduction to and update on today's hottest technology trends. Program participants will be able to identify technology trends and they will understand how these trends will impact or can be integrated into traditional library services. Course structure will include brief vignettes and demonstrations of a wide variety of technologies. Some of the topics to be covered include instant messaging, podcasting, open source software, spyware and other malware, developments in mobile computing, blogs and wikis, radio-frequency identification, and more. The hands-on class is 4 hours.

Cost for Class: Free

CE Credit: Upon successful completion of each class, the participant will receive 4 hours of continuing education credit awarded by the Medical Library Association (MLA).

Dr. Ana Cleveland named 2006 Librarian of the Year

Dr. Ana Cleveland, UNT Professor of Library and Information Science, was presented the LOTY plaque and certificate by Past Chair Bobbie Long. Dr. Ana's teachings, guidance and encouragement have produced an entire generation of new professionals in our field.

The library (Building E) is located in the South Campus.

Parking @ UTSW:
Parking is not free at UT Southwestern. Costs vary from $2 to $5. When clicking on the campus map you will see that Lot 7 is reserved for visitor parking. If that lot is full then overflow parking is available at a lot near Harry Hines Boulevard and Lofland Street.

Directions to the Multi Modality Education & Videoconference Center (E6.200):
Building E (otherwise known as the Fred F. Florence Bioinformation Center) is indicated on the above South Campus map. E6.200 is in the same building as the Library but cannot be accessed from within the Library. When entering Building E you will see the Library. To the left of the Library you will see a rather large corridor. You will notice when entering this corridor that you are walking toward three large official seals. To the left of these seals, the corridor jogs and you will see a bank of elevators. Take the elevators to the sixth floor. Upon emerging from these elevators you will see, to your right, an intersection of two corridors. There is an entrance to E6.200 at this intersection.

Jan. 18, 2007, meeting rescheduled due to ice and weather concerns

Today's meeting, originally scheduled to be held at Medical City, was cancelled due to weather concerns. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 22, 2007, at UT Southwestern.

HealthLINE Election Results

Thankfully, this was an election without negative campaign adds or scandal!

Congratulations to both Miriam Muallem who will serve as the next Chair Elect and to Carol Seiler who will be the next Treasurer. Their terms will begin in January.

HealthLINE members attend SCC in College Station

Here are some shots of our members enjoying the conference. It was very well organized and packed with learning and networking opportunities. We will be hosting in two years, so plan to help!

HealthLINE Meets at Cook Children's

HealthLINE met at Cook Children's in Fort Worth on Thursday, October 12. New officers and our SCC scholarship winners were announced during the business meeting. The program called "The Magic of Pediatric Nursing" was one of our most interesting yet and included lots of super "hand"outs.






Then came the "Library Crawl" -- tours of several medical libraries located in the Hospital District of Fort Worth. First we visited the Schwarz Health Sciences Library at Cook.

We also toured the Harris Cancer Resource Library and Harris Methodist Information Resources.
The Cancer Resource Library was awarded the 2006 National Health Information Award for Texas from the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Services.














Harris Methodist Information Resources serves a number of hospitals in the Metroplex.

July 20 meeting at TSRHC

HealthLINE met at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. A tour of the hospital was followed by an afternoon workshop on disaster planning for librarians.
