HealthLINE meets at Mary Kay, Dallas

Members gathered before taking a tour of the facility. The plant has giant mixing canisters and containers and uses amazing robots to speed the production of makeup while maintaining tight quality control. A panel discussion provided valuable insights.

MLA Webcast

UT Southwestern Library invites you to attend the MLA Webcast, "Finding Work-Life Balance: Strategies for You and Your Institution," to be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., central time, at UT Southwestern Library, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas TX 75390, in the administrative conference room, E3.314, located on the middle floor of the library. Copy Cataloging Class

The popular Copy Cataloging: A guide for beginners course is being offered LIVE and IN PERSON on March 18 here in Dallas,Texas. This will be held at the Amigos office (Beltline and Addison road – not too far from the Galleria for you shoppers and near all the wonderful Addison restaurants) from 9 AM to 4 PM CST. The course isgeared towards beginners or those who wish a refresher. If you have anyquestions, feel free to contact me.

Kelly Gonzalez, Librarian of the Year 2008

Congratulations to Kelly Gonzalez for being named HealthLINE's Librarian of the Year 2008 at the meeting on January 15, 2009. The award was given in recognition of her achievements as Chair of the SCC Local Arrangements Committee for the 2008 meeting held in Dallas, and her contribution to HealthLINE as Communications Committee member. HealthLINE now has its own website, thanks to Lisa and the Communications Committee. Explore all the information that has been captured in one location, including a "Members Only" section. Medical City, site of January meeting

HealthLINE met on January 15, 2009, at Medical City in Dallas. An excellent turnout of members enjoyed the announcement of the new Librarian of the Year, Kelly Gonzales, and the official presentation of our new website developed by Lisa Huang and the Communications Committee.

Miriam passes along a pink gavel and Robert's Rules to incoming Chair Elaine. Clayton welcomes dues from new and renewing members.

Student liaisons Ashley (UNT) and Bogi (TWU) enjoyed the meeting.

Members enjoyed making new acquaintances and catching up with long-time colleagues. Since our group covers the entire Metroplex our meetings are often the only time we see each other in person, although the listserv, blog and now the new website enable us to communicate quickly.

Our speaker was Mr. Terry Cockerham, Media Specialist at Medical City. He shared a number of useful tips (make that 5 and be sure to read every bit of this print) on making better PowerPoint presentations, showed examples of how PhotoShop can be used to edit photographs and explained the technical requirements for creating digital-based poster presentations.

We enjoyed seeing the many different parts of the hospital that Miriam works with -- the main library, a training room, conference and storage areas, a cancer resource center and visitor center.

HealthLINE meets at TWU in Denton

On Thursday, November 6, HealthLINE met at TWU in Denton. We met in the lovely Blagg-Huey Library and some of us took side trips to the Children's Collection.

Two students from UNT, Sudha and Kristen, were awarded HealthLINE Travel Award funds to attend the recent SCC meeting in Dallas. Kristen shared some of her experiences while attending the conference and graciously volunteering at the registration desk.

Brian recently announced he will be leaving the area to become Director at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center Library. HealthLINE honored him with a "Whereas" recitation.

We heard updates on both library schools in Denton. Dr. Ling Hwey Jeng, Director of the School of Library and Information Studies at TWU, and Dr. Ana Cleveland, Director of the Medical Informatics Programs, School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas, are both enthusiastic about their programs.

Officers for 2008 received fun gifts from Elaine as she prepares to serve as Chair for 2009.

Our speaker was Dr. Kristin Wiginton, TWU Professor of Health Studies, Epidemiology, who talked to us about "Current Topics on Infectious Diseases."
