If you aren't able to attend the MLA meeting going on this week in Washington D.C., the next best thing is to follow the MLA '10 Official Blog. Quite a lot of interesting summaries, information and pictures have been posted already.

You may wish to avoid this blog if seeing things like pictures from the NPR library tour or hearing about how wonderful the NLM campus is may lead to intense conference envy. You've been warned.

Cleveland Book Signing at MLA

MLA Headquarters has just announced that Ana and Don Cleveland will be doing a book signing for their award-winning Health Informatics MLA Guide in the Neal-Schuman booth (#220) on Saturday May 22, 5:30-6:30 during the opening exhibits reception. Copies of the book will be available at the Neal-Schuman booth and will also be sold at the MLA Scholarship booth all day on Saturday.

To reach the Conference Center, continue traveling east on Inwood Road. Turn left on Forest Park Road (2nd stop light after passing under Harry Hines Boulevard). The Conference Center will be on the left at 6001 Forest Park Rd.

Visitor parking is available in the Conference Center’s parking garage (on the right as you enter the street entrance). There is a fee to park in the garage ($3 per day), and payment must be made at the automated parking machine on the ground floor (Level 3) of the parking garage before leaving.

After parking, visitors will enter the Conference Center and walk towards the central atrium. The room will be straight ahead and on the left.

Lisa Huang, Librarian of the Year 2009

Lisa Huang of the Collin College Library was awarded the LOTY at the meeting. She was selected HealthLINE's Librarian of the Year for 2009.

"It is wonderful to celebrate the positive in the world today and a very positive energy in HealthLINE today is Lisa Huang. HealthLINE has a tradition of members who also contribute to the profession at the regional and national level, and Lisa is one of our younger members who has quickly jumped in to continue the tradition. At the local level , we have wanted for so long to have a HealthLINE website and to move to electronic voting and this has now been made possible by Lisa’s work and coordination of the work of others to bring this about."

HealthLINE meets at UNT Dallas

We met at the campus of UNT Dallas and heard about new electronic resources and features from Baker & Taylor /Majors and from Springer. Certificates were presented to thank members for their officer and committee service in 2009.

If you're going south on I-35E, there's no need to go all the way to I-20. You can exit at Camp Wisdom Road and turn left, and then go east about a mile to Houston School Road and turn right. The campus will be on your left.Parking:When arriving on campus, there's only one finished building. The parking lot closest to that will probably have enough empty spaces to accommodate everyone. At the present time, all parking is FREE.There will be signs directing visitors to the meeting location. Note: The south entrance (near the flag poles) may be closed for some construction work, but there is another entrance on the north side of the building if it is needed.

HealthLINE meets at Joe T's

HealthLINE met at Joe T Garcia's Mexian Restaurant in Fort Worth on Thursday, Nov. 5. Shirley did a great job handling the fact that the speaker was unable to attend at the last minute. Instead she had us share information about foreign language and culture resources and tips. During the business meeting we heard from the student Travel Award winner and were happy to hear that her SCC experiences convinced her to choose the medical librarianship line of studies at UNT. We enjoyed visiting with our colleagues and visitors.

HealthLINE moves to electronic balloting! Be sure to vote!

Today HealthLINE took a major step forward by initiating electronic balloting for our current election. It seems to be working smoothly, with one email sent for individual members and a separate one for institutional reps.

Thank you to the candidates and to the team who worked out our electronic voting system. It has been in the works a while, but required a bylaws review and revision first.

CE Class: Service Continuity Planning

Course title: A 10 Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning

Course Description:

Emergencies affecting libraries go beyond hurricanes and tornadoes. Is
your library prepared for a leaky pipe, fire, flood, pandemic flu or
other emergency event?

Designed to provide beginning level training in emergency preparedness
for librarians in medical libraries and information centers, the class
consists of an informative and engaging PowerPoint presentation,
interspersed with several interactive portions. Participants will learn
how to conduct a basic risk assessment for their libraries, how to craft
a basic emergency preparedness plan, strategies for continuing library
services from off-site, and options for obtaining assistance, both
web-based resources and via the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response
structure. This is a 2-hour class.

Travel Award Winners Announced!

Congratulations to our winners! The travel award will help with the expense of attending this year's SCC meeting which will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in October.

HealthLINE meets at Collin College, McKinney

The program was "No Cost in Hard Times: Open Source and Library 2.0 in HealthLINE Libraries." We had a guest speaker, Greg Hardin from TWU, followed by "Demonstrations and Discussion: Does It Work or Doesn’t It? Time Saver/Time Waster." HealthLINE members who provided demonstrations included Mary Peters, Shelly Burns, Lisa Huang, Sandy Swan, Clayton Crenshaw, Elaine Cox and Jane Scott.

HealthLINE members enjoy the opportunity to share with each other.

The new freestanding library building at Collin College just opened last month, June, 2009. It features a two story window and a wide open, light feeling. The commons area includes a snack shop and casual gathering area.

The entire building is beautiful! Thanks for hosting us!
